The Effect of Brain Gym Exercise on Cognitive Flexibility of Elder Male

Abstract
Cognitive flexibility as an individual's ability to keep equilibrium between psychological and psychological well-being in hazardous conditions that decreases with age. Exercises that can improve cognitive flexibility are important given the decrease in physical activity and its effect on psychological characteristics in the elderly. Does this intervention help to improve cognitive flexibility in the elderly?
The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of brain gym exercises on the cognitive flexibility of elder male.
The present study method was semi-experimental with pre-post test design. Participants was conveniently selected among all of elderly male of Shush city that engaged in cane company. 30 elder males randomly assigned into two experimental (average mean: 85.7±4.41 yr) and control (average mean: 80.77±3.24 yr) groups. The experimental group performed the brain gym exercises under the skilled coach by two 30-minute sessions through eight weeks, and during this, the control group performed their daily routine. Then participants in both groups performed the Wisconsin Card Storing Test was used to evaluate the cognitive flexibility of them and after the 16 training sessions (experimental group only), in post-test similar to pre-test. Data were analyzed by one-way ANCOVA test at significant level P≤0.05 by IBM SPSS version 25.
The results of the one-way ANCOVA showed there was significant difference between the experimental group and Cognitive Flexibility control (P <0.01) that experimental group had better performance than control group.Conclusion: The findings show that a period of brain gym exercises can affect the cognitive flexibility of male elderly male. Therefore, teachers and practitioners that deal with the elderly are recommended to be used to improve cognitive flexibility by this new method of exercise.
