Effectiveness of Pilates Exercises on High School Girls Premenstrual Syndrome

Abstract
Introduction: Premenstrual syndrome can affect the quality of life of students and cause many social and psychological problems. The most prevalent emotional symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) include depression, anger, irritability, crying, anxiety, confusion, isolation, poor concentration, sleep disorders, thirst, and appetite changes. Meanwhile, the most prevalent physical symptoms of this condition include breast pain, flatulence, weight gain, headache, and hand and foot edema. Although PMS symptoms are observed in many people, few people pay attention to its clinical symptoms
Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Pilates exercises on high school girls premenstrual syndrome.
Method: The present study was a semi-experimental applied study carried out with pre-test, post-test and comparison with control group. The population of this study included all female students aged 15 to 18 years old in Qazvin province. According to the criteria of entry and exit, 40 students were selected. The students and their parents satisfaction was gained through explaining the necessity and goals of the research. At first, the students completed the questionnaire of premenstrual syndrome and then they were randomly divided into two groups of experiment and control. The experimental group participated in the Pilates program for a period of 8 weeks.
Result: The results of multivariate covariance analysis showed that the PMS symptoms of the experimental group increased significantly after the Pilates exercises compared to the control group (p <0.05).
Conclusion: Pilates exercises seem to be an effective intervention for reducing students' PMS symptoms, so these exercises can be used to improve PMS symptoms. Due to its low cost, safety, accessibility, and pleasure, pilates can be an effective way of improving the PMS symptoms. Since this syndrome can affect the students’ academic and social performance, pilates training can improve their performance in the mentioned areas.
