Abstract
Physical education curriculum is an important part of educational system and has an important role in physical, mental and emotional skills in students. In addition improving quality of physical education curriculum facilitates mentioned goals. So, the purpose of this study is to design the model of improving quality of physical education curriculum in North Khorasan schools.
This research is a mixed method study that has been done in qualitative and quantitative phases. In qualitative phase statistical sample consisted of 15 experienced physical education teachers selected by snowball method. In qualitative phase data collected through deep interview with experts and Interviews continued until theoretical saturation. In qualitative phase data analysis was done by grounded theory method. In quantitative phase statistical sample consisted of 194 physical education teachers in North Khorasan. Research instrument in quantitative phase was a questionnaire consisted of 68 questions made based on the model of qualitative phase. The validity and reliability of questionnaire was confirmed by physical education experts and Crhonbach’ Alpha (α=0.91) respectively. In quantitative phase, the SPSS 18 was used to do descriptive statistics and exploratory factor analysis. Also, Confirmatory Factor Analysis and structural equation modeling were done by LISREL.
The results of structural equation modeling showed sports equipment and facilities, human resources, teaching methods, students behaviors and physical education exams in schools are causal factors affecting the quality of physical education curriculum (effect coefficient=0.89). In addition contextual and intervening factors including social, political and economical environment effecting strategies (effect coefficient=0.39). The results showed current quality of physical curriculum influenced in strategies (effect coefficient=0.54). Strategies including development of curriculum content, empowering human resources, development of sports equipment and facilities, paying attention to physical education goals and paying attention to performance evaluation. Also, the results showed strategies effect on consequences (effect coefficient= 0.58) including physical and biological health, psychological health, improving culture of sport for all and economic benefits.
For improving the quality of physical education curriculum it necessary to pay attention to strategies. Also, strategies should be determined based on contextual factors.
