Abstract
The shoulder girdle is at high risk of injury in overhead sports like handball, tennis or volleyball because it faces high loads and forces during throwing, serving and spike. Repeated movements can cause changes in muscle balance, scapular position, and shoulder girdle dysfunction. According to previous studies on the effect of scapular dyskinesia on athletes with overhead pattern, it was observed that athletes with scapular dysfunction had a significant difference in scores of functional test with healthy subjects.
Comparison Upper Extremity Function between Volleyball and Handball elite athletes with scapula movement impairment.
A total of 100 male overhead athletes between 18 and 30 years old, 50 volleyball players (age=22.9±3.2 years, weight=83.1±6.42 kg and height=190±7.2cm) and 50 Handball players (age = 23.7 ± 3.2 years, weight = 78.3 ± 3.4 kg and height=181 ± 3.2 cm) were included in this study. Participants classified with obvious scapular movement impairment during the weighted abduction and flexion task of the scapular dyskinesis test. Scapular position assessed by lateral scapular slide test at 3 positions (rest, 45°and 90°). Functional upper limb performance was assessed using Y-Balance Test Upper Quarter, Seated Medicine Ball Throw and Closed Kinetic Chain Upper Extremity Stability Test. Kolmogorov-Simonov, used for study of data normality, independent T test was used for analyze group differences.
There was significant difference between the YBT-UQ at all Direction between volleyball and handball players (P=0.001) and normalized composite scores (p=0.006). There were significant difference between groups the SMBT (P=0.001) and CKCUEST (P=0.02).
The differences in movement patterns in volleyball and handball can affected the variables and differences obtained.scapular dynamic test among handball players, scapular movement was impaired during arm flexion and Winging of the inferior angle, there is insufficient activity of the serratus anterior muscle to maintain the scapula against the thorax, But among volleyball players scapular movement was impaired during the return from shoulder flexion. The deltoid and supraspinatus muscles do not appear to be elongating, whereas the serratus anterior and the trapezius muscles are elongating more rapidly, which is one of the causes of impingement syndrome.
