Abstract
The role of the spine as the main axis of the body is very important. Scoliosis is a three-dimensional deformity of the spine and rib cage and one of the most common spinal deformities associated with lateral deviation and vertebral rotation. It may develop as a single primary curve (C shape) or as two curves (S shape). This deformity is measured using Cobb's angle.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the Schroth exercise on the angle of Scoliosis Curves of Adolescents with Non-Structural Scoliosis Deformity
The present study is quasi-experimental. Research design is a two-group design with pre-test and post-test in experimental and control groups and intervention in the experimental group. The participants of this study consisted of 24 male students of 10 to 15 years old with Non-Structural Scoliosis Deformity with C shape lateral curvature of 10 to 20 degrees. The training group performed Schroth exercises was applied 3 times a week for 10 weeks and the control group didn't no exercise. To evaluate the angle of Scoliosis Curves, an X-ray image of the spine in the anterior-posterior view was used. Measurements were taken before and after the exercise program. SPSS software version 23 was used for statistical analysis. Independent t-test and paired t-test were used for data analysis. The significance level was considered 0.05.
The angle of Scoliosis Curves decreased from 13.08 ± 3.9° to 7.44 ± 3.47° on average in the training group, All these effects were significant. No significant difference was found in the control group.
Conclusion: The 10-week Schroth exercise caused significant effects in the Cobb’s angle. The conservative treatment method was found to be effective even at a 10 degree or higher Cobb’s angle. In the future, universal exercise approach methods and preventive training for the treatment of scoliosis should be developed further.
