Abstract
Fall is a common problem in Elderly; fear of falling and reduced daily activities are the consequences of falling. The pattern of recall and timing of the distal and proximal lower limb muscles changes in the elderly.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate effect of 8 week Pilates exercise on balance and antisipatory and cocontraction of selected lower limb exterimity muscles in older adults.
This study was quasi-experimental with pre-test and post-test design. For this purpose, 22 elderly women entered over sixty years were recruited based on voluntary entry and exit criteria by purposeful sampling method and was divided into control and experimental group. The experimental group participated in Pilates exercises for 8 weeks and 3 one hour sessions per week. Berg Balance Test and Timed up and go and the electrical activity of the selected landing leg muscles (anterior tibialis, Vastus medialis, Vastus lateralis,Rectus femoris, Lateral Gastrocnemius, Biceps femories muscle) according to the SENIAM protocol. First, MVIC test was performed on each muscle to normalize the data, and then, the subjects performed the in Downward stair 20 cm Before and After Pilates was collected from 8 weeks of exercise. Covariance and Wilcoxon signed-rank test tests used with a significant level of 0.05% using SPSS 24 software.
The results showed that after eight weeks of Pilates exercise, there was a significant effect on Berg balance test (P˂0.001), timed up and go (P = 0.009), onset time of tibia anterior (P ˂ 0.001), Vastus laterialis(P = 0.004), Vastus Medialis(P = 0.033) , Biceps femoris (P = 0.001). Also there was Significant decrease in muscle activity of Vastus laterialis (P = 0.045), Rectus femories(P = 0.05) and ratio of Vastus laterialis to biceps femoris(P = 0.011) within 100 milliseconds before the first foot contact with the ground.
The results of this study showed that Pilates training can accelerate the onset of activity and decrease the contraction ratio and improve motor function in the elderly. According to the results of this study, it is recommended to use Pilates exercises for elderly training and rehabilitation program.
