Abstract
Given the nature of karate sport, finding a way to increase athletes' fitness and performance levels is of great importance. One of these methods is the use of nutritional and pharmaceutical supplements to prevent red blood cell loss and anemia
The purpose of the present semi-experimental study was to determine the effect of 8 weeks of iron and vitamin C supplementation during preparation training on blood oxygen transfer parameters of karate women national team. Twenty-four women were selected and divided randomly into two control (n = 12) and experimental (n = 12) groups.
Then, 24 h before fasting, 5 ml of blood was drawn from the subjects' right hand vein and poured into a CBC jar (containing 5% EDAT 0.2%) and the rest was poured into a hemolysis tube. For measurement of hemoglobin, hematocrit and ferritin were transferred to the laboratory. The control group also received no supplementation. After 8 weeks and 24 hours after the last training session, individual characteristics and research variables were measured again. Finally, Shapiro-Wilk test was used for data normality and independent T-test was used for inferential analysis of data using SPSS / 21 software. Significance level was considered α≤0.05. The results showed that 8 weeks of iron and vitamin C supplementation during training had a significant effect on hemoglobin, hematocrit and ferritin in karate players.
According the research findings and the importance of research variables on the performance and success of karate athletes, it is recommended to use these supplements in consultation with a doctor.
