Abstract
Diabetes complications are the main reasons behind morbidity and mortality that are preventable by healthy diet and physical activity. There are few studies about the effect of aerobic training and pomegranate juice consumption on insulin resistance in human. Also various training protocols are associated with different results. This study assessed the effect of aerobic training and pomegranate juice consumption on insulin resistance in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
This randomized clinical trial was performed in middle-aged men (45-60 years) with type 2 diabetes referred to health centers in 2019. Subjects were then randomly divided in four groups including: aerobic training + pomegranate juice (n = 9); Aerobic training (n = 10); pomegranate juice (n = 9) and control (n = 10). The aerobic training program consisted of 60-75%, 20-40 min/day, 3 days/wk running and walking. Patients in the pomegranate juice group consumed 200ml of pomegranate juice (sugar or additives free) daily for eight weeks.
The results of the present study showed that the combination of aerobic training and pomegranate juice supplementation compared to aerobic training or pomegranate juice group alone, significantly reduced insulin resistance in patients with type 2 diabetes.
The results of this study showed that combining aerobic training and pomegranate juice consumption for 8 weeks induced positive changes in insulin resistance index in men with type II diabetes. Therefore, according to these results, combined effect of pomegranate juice and aerobic training, as a suitable program it can be useful for all people especially in type II diabetes to control diabetes and to prevent its complication.
