Abstract
Environmental characteristics can affect physical activity of urban population and lead to health and economic benefits for individuals. The purpose of this study was to compare body composition and physical fitness indices of 10-11 years old non-athlete girl students in Isfahan city with regard to their house yard and school area.
The statistical population consisted of 55218 non-athlete girl students aged 10-11 years in Isfahan educational areas. According to Morgan table, 400 samples from six educational zone of Isfahan and 67 samples from each zone were randomly clustered selected. Data gathering tool was a researcher-made questionnaire of house area yard with 10 questions and check list related to school area gathered and per capita area student was collected and calculated for each school. Samples Selected based on information collected divided into four groups: Small house yard area and Small school area (N=101), Small house yard area and large school area (N=105), large house yard area and small school area (n =117), and large house yard area and large school area (n = 69). At first, body composition indices including height, weight, waist-to-hip ratio, body mass index and body fat percentage were measured. Next, physical fitness indices were measured include cardiopulmonary endurance through the 540 m run, shoulder girdle muscles endurance by sleeping pull-up test, abdominal muscle endurance by sit-and-up test, lower extremity anaerobic power by Sargent jump test, Flexibility by sit and reach Test and agility by using 4×9 m test. Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney U with SPSS software at level 0.05.
there was significant effect of Yard area of house and school area on body mass index (p = 0.026), cardiovascular endurance (p = 0.002), shoulder girdle muscle endurance (p = 0.000), lower extremity anaerobic power (p = 0.029), flexibility (p = 0.001) and agility (p = 0.009). But there was no significant effect on body fat (p=0.755), body weight (p=0.069), waist-to-hip ratio (p=0.730) and abdominal muscle endurance (p= 0.558).
Findings showed that Yard house area and school area were more effective on physical fitness indexes than body composition indexes.
