Abstract
Inflammatory factors are one of the main factors affecting the immune system function, which increase their serum concentration is more common in obese people. Physical activity along with the use of medicinal herbs improve the protective role of the immune system. The purpose of this study was to effect of eight weeks of resistance and high intensity interval endurance training with turmeric on serum levels of pro-inflammatory factors in healthy and obese men.
The research method was quasi-experimental with pre-test and post-test design with control group. For this purpose, 78 healthy and obese men with mean age of 39±4.42 years, body mass index 33±3.16kg/m2, body fat percentage 31±3.28%, were selected randomly according to the inclusion criteria, and were divided into six groups: (RT, HIIET, T, RT-T, HIIET-T, C). The training program and turmeric consumption was performed for eight weeks, three sessions a week on the principle of overload. Dependent variables (IL-8, CRP and VEGF) in pre- and post-test were measured using validated methods and tools. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA at the significant level of α = 0.05.
Serum concentrations of IL-8 increased from pre-test to post-test in all experimental groups. The increase rate was significant only in the endurance high intensity interval training (HIIET, P=0.013) and resistance training (RT, P=0.041) groups. Serum concentrations of CRP and VEGF decrease from pre-test to post-test in all experimental groups. The reduction rate was significant in the high intensity interval endurance training with turmeric (HIIET-T, P=0.021) and resistance training with turmeric (RT-T, P=0.034) groups. Inter-group comparisons showed significant differences in serum concentrations of IL-8, CRP and VEGF(p=0.038). The highest percentage of changes in dependent variables belonged to HIIET-T and RT groups.
Resistance and high intensity interval endurance training associated with inflammatory conditions. But optimum consumption of turmeric along with exercise, in addition to reducing the effects of exercise-induced inflammatory conditions, reduces metabolic syndrome indices.
